A research team from Zhanibekov University has made a significant archaeological discovery at Bogen Reservoir in Kazakhstan’s Turkestan region. An unusually dry season lowered the water levels, revealing ancient treasures hidden for centuries.

In just a week, the team uncovered dozens of stone tools from the Late Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods, including chalcedony flakes and cutting plates. Additionally, they discovered several Bronze Age burial sites. Though the skeletal remains were poorly preserved, the grave goods were extraordinary, featuring decorated ceramics and a gold-plated bronze ornament, among other jewelry items.

One burial, dated between the 1st century BC and 1st century AD, contained socketed arrowheads, a utility knife, and a ceramic jug. Experts believe these findings highlight the region’s long history of human settlement. Once analysis is complete, the artifacts will be displayed at a local museum.

Earlier this year, archaeologists from Margulan University reported finding bronze knives near Lake Toraygyr. These artifacts, linked to the early Saka period, demonstrate advanced metallurgy and cultural exchanges in Central Asia. Meanwhile, a gold ring from the Scythian era was found at another site, reflecting the spiritual beliefs of the Saka elites.

In the Zhetysu region, the ruins of a medieval city, likely destroyed during Mongol invasions, have been unearthed. This site includes a defensive tower and evidence of fire damage, drawing comparisons to UNESCO-listed sites like Talgar.

Moreover, the Saryarka Archaeological Institute has identified 25 sites in central Kazakhstan, spanning from the Bronze Age to the medieval era. Excavations are set to begin once official permits are secured.

Kazakhstan’s recent archaeological discoveries, from ancient tools to Saka treasures, reveal a rich tapestry of history and cultural exchange across the steppe. These finds underscore the country's enduring historical significance.
