Russian President Vladimir Putin reached out to the leaders of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan on Sunday to brief them about his recent discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska. The talks focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as well as trade and energy collaborations between Russia and the two Central Asian nations.
Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of Putin's meeting with Trump, describing it as a significant step toward enhancing mutual understanding between Russia and the United States. Tokayev's office highlighted the summit as a potential turning point in strengthening Russia's international standing and fostering global cooperation.
Despite the optimistic tone, doubts linger about the specifics of the Alaska meeting, particularly as Putin and Trump left without securing the Ukraine cease-fire that many had hoped for. Concerns persist among Ukraine and its European partners that Trump might endorse a settlement allowing Russia to retain more Ukrainian territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with European leaders, plans to meet with Trump at the White House to advocate for a peace agreement that includes security assurances.
During his conversation with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Putin shared the key points from his dialogue with Trump. Mirziyoyev expressed his approval of the agreements reached and conveyed optimism for a speedy resolution to the Ukrainian conflict. The discussions also covered ways to boost trade between Russia and Uzbekistan.
Additionally, Tokayev took the opportunity to thank Putin for Russia's involvement in Kazakhstan's energy sector, hinting at ongoing cooperation on a nuclear power plant project. The Kremlin issued similar statements confirming these exchanges, emphasizing the importance of these partnerships for regional stability and development.
