Javokhir Sindarov entered the FIDE Candidates event in Cyprus as a dangerous unknown and has quickly turned into the player to beat. The 20-year-old Uzbek has won five games and drawn two, collecting six of seven possible points in the 14-round tournament and sitting one and a half points ahead of American Fabiano Caruana. The victor in the event will win the right to meet reigning world champion Gukesh Dommaraju later this year.

Sindarov is the youngest competitor among the eight challengers and is making his debut at the Candidates. After a blistering first week he has become the clear frontrunner, forcing opponents to adapt to an uncompromising, tactical style that has yielded results against top-ranked rivals.

Leading figures in the chess community have been vocal. Former world champion Garry Kasparov said the rapid string of wins can snowball into a psychological edge, putting pressure on rivals and sharpening Sindarov’s decision-making. Judit Polgár praised his fearless approach and suggested his long-term prospects are bright, while cautioning that maintaining focus under mounting expectation will be crucial. British grandmaster Nigel Short highlighted Sindarov’s classical grounding and his capacity to steer chaotic positions calmly. Even nonparticipant Magnus Carlsen admitted many had not forecast such a hot start.

Sindarov’s rise has roots in notable earlier achievements: he won the 2025 World Cup in Goa and became one of his country’s youngest national champions at 13. Still, Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov remains the higher-rated player overall and has recently enjoyed a string of tournament victories, though he did not qualify for this year’s Candidates.

Monday was a scheduled rest day, and seven rounds remain on the calendar. Analysts say Sindarov’s margin gives him room for error, but added that the remainder of the field will have time to prepare targeted strategies. If his momentum holds, he’ll head into a world title match as a rare debutant with both form and confidence — but the bulk of the event, and its mental grind, is still to come.
